BANNED FOR TRUTH : HOW DIDI’S APPEASEMENT POLICY THREATENS THE FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION ------- By Prachetosh
"Where
the mind is without fear and the head is held high, where knowledge is free,
where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Into that heaven of freedom my Father, let my country awake." These
powerful words by Rabindranath Tagore perfectly encapsulate the importance of
freedom of expression in a democratic society. However, recent events in West
Bengal have brought into question the government's commitment to upholding this
fundamental right.
The
decision by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to ban the thought-provoking movie
"The Kerala Story" has sparked a heated debate on the importance of
freedom of expression in Bengal. The government's justification for the ban was
the need to "maintain peace" and avoid violence in the state, but
this decision sets a dangerous precedent for censorship and violates the very
foundations of democracy. "The Kerala Story" sheds light on a disturbing
trend in society, where Islamist groups are using "Love Jihad" to
trap young Hindu girls and send them to become ISIS terrorists. By banning the
movie, the Chief Minister is not only violating the fundamental right of
freedom of expression but also suppressing the truth and allowing Love Jihad to
spread throughout the state. This is particularly concerning given that Love
Jihad has already made its way into West Bengal.
The
decision to ban the movie is an attack on artistic freedom and a way of appreciating
the ISIS and Islamists involved in this practice. It raises serious questions
about the government's commitment to the principles of democracy and freedom of
expression. If the government can ban a movie that sheds light on a societal
issue, then what is stopping them from censoring other works of art,
literature, or journalism that challenge their authority or prevailing societal
norms? The implications of this decision go far beyond just one movie; it is an
attack on the very foundations of democracy and freedom of expression. It is
essential to recognize that the freedom of expression is a fundamental right
enshrined in the Indian Constitution. Any attempt to restrict or suppress this
right not only undermines democracy but also violates the principles of human
rights.
It
is important to note that the ban on "The Kerala Story" is not just a
violation of the fundamental right of freedom of expression, but it is also a
reflection of the appeasement policy that has been prevalent in the state of
West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee and her government have been accused of continuing
their policy of appeasing the Muslim community in the state for their votes. This
appeasement policy has led to the neglect of other communities, and the
suppression of their voices and concerns. It is this policy that is one of the
reasons why a thought-provoking movie such as "The Kerala Story" has
been banned. By giving in to the demands of a particular community and
suppressing the voices of others, the government has undermined the very
principles of democracy.
Moreover,
the ban on "The Kerala Story" is not an isolated incident. In recent
years, there have been several instances where books, movies, and art
exhibitions have been banned or censored in West Bengal. This is a worrying
trend that reflects the growing intolerance and authoritarianism in the State
of West Bengal.
It
is the responsibility of the government to uphold and protect the fundamental
right of freedom of expression and stop their appeasement policy of appeasing a
particular section of the society. Instead of banning movies and censoring
works of art, the government should engage in constructive dialogue and debate
to address societal issues. This can help foster an open and democratic society
where diverse views and opinions can be expressed freely.
In
conclusion, the ban on "The Kerala Story" should serve as a wake-up
call for all of us to recognize the importance of freedom of expression and
work towards creating a society where diverse opinions and ideas can thrive. We
must reject censorship and embrace an open and democratic society, one that
values free speech, encourages critical thinking, and fosters creativity. Only
then can we build a future that is inclusive, tolerant, and just for all.
